February 14, 2017
It might have taken 3 overtimes but the Coastal Carolina Men's Club Lacrosse team emerged victorious against SELC Northeast rival Citadel, 10-9 in Charleston, SC. With this win, the Chants move to 2-1 on the season and 1-0 in divisional play.
A tight game throughout, with neither the Chants or the Bulldogs holding more than a 3 goal lead at any point, lead to a last minute goal by the Bulldogs to force overtime. It took till the third 4 minute overtime period, but Sophomore Attackman Nick Aquino stuck the game winner in the top right corner off an assist from Freshman Attackman Nick Maldari. The dynamic duo combined for 10 points on the day with Aquino tallying a team high 4 goals and Maldari posted 1 goal and 5 assists. Sophomore Harry Staley rounded out a great day for the Chanticleer attackmen, with a goal and an assist of his own. A pair of Chants recorded their first points of the season as Senior Midfielder Joe Wilson tallied 1 goal and 1 assist and Junior Defensive Midfielder Mike Barresi chipped in the only second half goal for the Chants. Freshman Mike Hilland continued his point streak by stinging an unassisted goal past the Citadel goalie late in the first quarter. The goal scoring was rounded out by Sophomore Alec Mastroine during the Chants 6 goal outburst in the second quarter.
Senior Goalie August Schoenfelder had another stellar day between the pipes recording 17 saves while only giving up the 9 goals. Though the Chants recorded a season high 12 penalties resulting in 8.5 minutes in the penalty box, the man down defense anchored by Senior Defender Pat Winum and Junior Defender Necoda Nealon killed 10 of 12 opportunities faced. Sophomore Defensemen Zach Lytle once again led the team with 6 ground balls and 4 highlight reel takeaways.
The Chanticleers have moved themselves into first place in the Northeast Region of Division II SELC play and can lock up a playoff spot when they host the Wofford Terriers on March 12. This game will be the first of three regular season home contests for the Chants. Face-off is set for 2 pm.
