Chants Fly Past Eagles in 2017 Season Opener in Historic Fashion

The Coastal Carolina Men's Club Lacrosse team started their 2017 campaign in historic fashion by posting the first ever shutout in the programs history. The Chants defeated the Eagles of Emory University by a score of 12-0. This also goes down as First Year Head Coach Bradley Dunn's first win as a collegiate head man.

Senior Goalkeeper August Schoenfelder recorded 12 saves in the victory while not surrendering a single goal and heading up a perfect (15-15) clearing game for the Chants. Senior Long Stick Midfielder Sam Wheatley tied with Junior Defensive Midfielder Mike Barresi and Sophomore Defender Zach Lytle set the pace with 4 ground balls a piece. Sophomore Face-Off Midfielder Matt Peters (6-8, 75%) and Freshman Mike Hilland (5-6, 84%) combined to go 79% at the face-offs, spearheading the efforts of the entire team.

The balanced scoring output of 3 goals per quarter was led by a duo of underclassmen at attack. Sophomore Harry Staley and Freshman Nick Maldari both netted hat tricks on the day. The reminder of the goals were scored by Juniors Nate Ryan (2) and Ryan Slane (1), Sophomores Nick Aquino (1) and Alec Mastroine (1) and Freshman Hilland (1). Assists were recorded by Junior Slane (1), Sophomores Chris Bergman (1), Mastroine (1), and Freshman Hilland (2). The underclassmen trio of Sophomore Staley and Freshmen Hilland and Maldari tied for a team high 3 points.

The Chants Man down defense, anchored by Senior Defenseman Pat Winum, and Sophomore Brian Thorne, posted a clean sheet killing both penalties they faced. The Extra Man unit went 50% (1-2) on the day with Junior Ryan stinging the corner for their lone extra man goal.

The Chants look to continue the winning ways as they face the Owls of Kennesaw State University. The Owls enter the 2017 ranked number 6 in the MCLA Coaches Poll and look to make a return trip to the MCLA National Tournament Powered By Under Armour. Face off is at 12:30 pm Sunday February 5 at Kennesaw State Stadium.
