Chants Fall To Stiff Competition During Weekend Home Stand

The Coastal Carolina Men's Club Lacrosse program hosted both East Carolina University and Appalachian State at the CCU Club and Intramural Sports Complex this weekend and unfortunately ended the weekend with a 0-2 record. The Chants faced the Pirates from ECU on Saturday falling 13-10. The Chants did see 5 different players record goals and 4 contribute assists. Sophomore Attackman Nick Aquino paced the field with 7 total points on the day (4G, 3A), followed by attack line members Freshman Nick Maldari (2G, 1A) and Junior Ryan Slane (3G, 0A) who both notched 3 points. Sophomores Harry Staley and Alec Mastrione rounded out the goal scorers both recording a goal a piece. Junior Will Stewart and Sophomore Alec Villafana both etched their names into 2017 by dishing out one assist a piece, the first point on the season for both players.

The penalty bug bit the Chants hard on Saturday with 6 minutes and 30 seconds total in penalties served on the day. The Chants also could not get on track at the face off either with Sophomore Matt Peters (10/27) and Freshman Mike Hilland (1/3) combining for 11 wins at the draw.

On Sunday, the Chants faced a Nationally Ranked Appalachian State program and fell by one goal 11-10. In a game that saw neither team hold a lead larger than 2 goals at any one time, Sophomore Attackman Nick Aquino paced the Chants with 4 points (3G, 1A). The Chants did have a total of 6 goal scorers on the day including Sophomore Derek Jackson getting his first of the year to open the scoring in the first quarter. Juniors Michael Barresi (1G, 0A), and Ryan Slane (2G, 1A), Sophomores Harry Staley (1G, 0A) and Alec Mastrione (0G, 2A) and Freshman Nick Maldari (2G, 1A) all tallied points against the Mountaineers.

Sophomore Defensemen Zach Lytle paced the team with 3 ground balls on the day and was one of 12 Chants to record a grounder. Senior Pat Winum and Junior Will Stewart platooned the face offs going a combined 13-25 with Winum recording an impressive 9-13. Senior Goalie August Schoenfelder stood tall against the talented shooters from ASU, making 13 saves on the day.

Up next for the Chanticleers is a date with the College of Charleston to determine who will go into the home stretch of the SELC regular season schedule as the number one seed in the Northwest Region.
